Hercules and the Erymanthian Boar

Jasper, solid pale greyish-blue with white relief. Oval, with relief of Hercules walking to the right in profile, with the boar slung over his right shoulder and his left leg forward. There are three large holes and one small hole in the reverse behind the relief.

The fourth Labour of Hercules was to capture alive the fierce Boar which lived on the slopes of Mount Erymanthus and was ravaging the country round Psophis. The relief on the plaque was probably modelled by John Flaxman Senior, 1775. The invoice for the model of 1775 was signed by John Flaxman Junior on his father's behalf.
