Portrait Medallion of Horatio Viscount Nelson (1758-1805)

Jasper, white with dark blue wash on both sides, and greyish- white relief. Oval, with bust portrait of Horatio, Viscount Nelson in profile to left, one-armed, and wearing the star and sash of a Knight of the Bath. On the reverse there are two large circular holes.

The medallion modelled by John de Vaere shows Nelson after he had lost his arm, and wearing the star and sash of a Knight of the Bath which he was granted in 1797. The mould, and original wax with de Vaere’s receipt for £2.15s.0d. dated 9 November 1798 are at the Wedgwood Museum, Barlas¬ton. He modelled Nelson as part of a set of Admirals; the others were Duncan, Howe and St Vincent.
