Jasper, solid pale blue with white reliefs and serpents. Shape 266C. Ovoid body with gently curving shoulders, slender neck, flaring mouth, and two high inward scrolling handles inter-twined with serpents, standing on a short stem and circular foot, on a square plinth. The sides of the plinth are decorated with a row white anthemions. The foot has a border of acanthus foliage, and a row of beading at the junction of the stem with the body, which has a calyx of laurel leaves. The body is decorated on one side with a small child beside a standing woman who is comforting another to the left, who has a small sheep beside her and Cupid and a ewer behind her. On the extreme left and right there is a tree. On the other side, there is a woman carrying an infant, with a small child, a ewer, and a cradle on the left, and a dragonfly over head. There is a laurel wreath on the shoulder, elongated anthemions and a band of guilloche round the neck, and beading round the rim.

The subject on one side is from the Maternity series attributed to Lady Elizabeth Templetown (1747-1823), who first supplied designs to Wedgwood in 1783, when Josiah Wedgwood wrote to her asking for more. See Documentation.
This vase is Shape 266, in the Wedgwood Shape Book (54.30019 at Barlaston): 'Vase with Chariots in the/Clouds serpents round/. . handles.' Also in the Shape Book rebound 1916 with watermark of 1794, No. 266. Made in 15 inches at 42/6, 16 inches at 63/- bl. 126/- Jasper 14/4 63/- 105/- 11 jasp 63/- jasp 110/13 plain bisque 12/-, 15 15/- and large with holes for flowers 18/-. An illustration of the shape appears in the Wedgwood Catalogue . . . of 1787, class XVIII 'Vase with chariots in the/Clouds serpents round/handles'. The vase could be supplied with a base like MAR.C.11-1912. Shape 266 first appears in the oven books on 6 September 1783 as '266, 4 [blue & white jasper vases] snakes round handles 17 ins.'
