Note

The drawing is one of a series of preparatory sketches made by the artist on an assignment from the Standard Oil Company to record their operations in the North Sea in 1968. The artist writes "What you have I think, is a study for a larger drawing", 14 September 1971 (see letter in files). In an elaborate form the composition was used for the cover of the Standard Oil Co. Magazine, 'The Lamp', Winter 1968.
