Folding fan with a single leaf of paper, with tiny flecks of mother-of-pearl on the leaf. Painted with 'The Three Cardinal Virtues': Fortitude, Wisdom and Moderation, after Raphael's fresco in the Vatican.
Sticks and guards of pierced ivory, the latter backed with gilt foil.
History note: Colonel Leonard C. Messel (1872-1953); his daughter Anne Countress of Rosse (1092-1992)
