Le Mari Moderne Fan

Folding fan, double skin leaf painted in bodycolour and watercolour. Sticks of pierced and cut ivory, guards of carved, cut and pierced ivory backed with mother-of-pearl (14+2) rivet set with clear pastes. Inscribed 'Le mari moderne'. Front: the centre depicts a comic scene with a lady flanked by two gentlemen, one sitting and holding his arm around her waist, the other standing, holding her hand. She is holding one end of a lead, the other end of which is fixed to her husband's nose; he is standing on the left. The ground is painted with a tree, rocks and a tree trunk on the left, and a tree and rock with the inscription 'Le mari moderne' on the right. The background is white with indistinct buildings on the right. Top and lower edging of skin. Back: A pedestal, a tree and some little rocks sit in the centre on a white background. Sticks: all sticks and the shoulder of the guards are pierced in the same way, forming little windows when the fan is closed. an eye-shaped hole in the middle is flanked by five linked dots and a lozenge flanked by two pairs of dots. Guards: both guards proper are decorated in the same way: a flower on the bottom, a quiver and a flower in an oval medallion, a bow, a standing flute player and a music trophy on top.
