Applied Faces Fan

Double paper leaf, painted in water-colours, the front also appliqued with painted ivory and coloured silks. Gold paper binding on upper edge. Sticks and guards of silver-gilt filigree decorated with cloisonne enamels (17+2), the guards overlaid with silver-gilt plaques, chased(?) in low relief. Brass(?) rivet.
Front: Twenty-four Chinese men, women and children in indoor and outdoor settings. Their faces are of applied, painted ivory and their clothes of silk. Border of flowers, fruit, vegetables and butterflies on a silver background
Back: An exotic pheasant and hen amid flowers and foliage on a silver background. Border of flowers, fruit, vegetables and butterflies on a pale geen background.
Sticks: Filigree of adjacent whirls, enamelled in green and blue with three groups of buildings and trees on islands, two boats, birds and butterflies. Above the head, a flower and leaf on each stick forming a curved row when the fan is open.
Guards: Filigree of adjacent whirls enamelled in blue and green with a floral spray, overlaid on the front by a shaped panel decorated in low relief with figures, buildings, trees and flowers.
