Horn, carved and pressed. Oval with straight sides. The top of the pull-off lid depicts a portrait bust of Charles I, in profile, facing right, in an oval cartouche.

Unsigned but probably by Jean Obrisset. The portrait is after the medal of 1670 by John Roettiers. It lacks the legend round the outer edge which appears on some signed boxes: CAROLVS D.G. ANGLIA SCOTIAE HIBERNIAE REX

Carving
: The base, sides and lid were carved from horn. The pieces were then heated and pressed to form flat sheets, moulding or pressed patterns before being glued to form a box, which was then stained, possibly to resemble bronze.
