Description

Cream-coloured earthenware (Queen's ware), moulded, lead-glazed, and painted in lilac enamel. Of rounded lozenge shape, with a shaped edge, and rim moulded with shells, scrolls and leaves, and a shallow centre. The moulding is outlined in lilac, and the rim and centre are strewn with asymmetrically placed motifs: a peony spray, two sprigs of leaves, and a spray of three larger leaves.

Note

The form was derived from a Sèvres soup tureen stand in the service given by Louis XV to the Duchess of Bedford in 1763 at the end of her husband's embassy to Paris to conclude the Peace at the end of the Seven Year's War. On 29 May 1765 Wedgwood wrote from London to Thomas Bentley, telling him that he had been taking patterns from it for three days. (Wedgwood MS E25-18093)
