St Paul, Epistles with gloss

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i parchment flyleaf + 134 fols. + i parchment flyleaf, 265 x 165 mm (170 x 140 mm), three columns: central column with biblical text 170 x 70 mm, 22 lines with interlinear gloss, outer column with gloss 170 x 40 mm, varying number of lines, inner column with gloss 170 x 23 mm, varying number of lines, ruled in hard point and plummet, quire marks.
BINDING: Late fifteenth century, Italy, brown leather over wooden boards, sewn on three supports, blind-stamped with interlaced rope work design and gilt punch dots, four small foliate corner bosses and one central boss on each cover, two leather straps (modern replacements) with metal clasps and rings on upper cover, metal catch plates on lower cover, metal title plate nailed to top of lower cover and enclosing parchment label inscribed Epistole s[an]c[t]i Pauli, modern repairs and leather replacement at head of upper cover.

ORNAMENTATION: Four zoomorphic initials formed of beasts and occasional human figures entwined in coiled foliage scrolls drawn in brown ink, tinted or highlighted with striated, vein-like patterns in red, blue, green and yellow, and set against bright green, blue, orange-red and yellow backgrounds, for the first four epistles: fol. 1r [P, 13 ll.]; fol. 26r [P, 12 ll.]; fol. 51r [P, 13 ll.]; fol. 67v [P, 12 ll.]; alternate red and blue initials [6-13 ll.] with voided ornament and geometric or arabesque motifs in the contrasting colour for remaining epistles (e.g. fol. 113v); alternate red and blue initials [2-3 ll.] with geometric ornament for prologues (e.g. fol. 26r); titles of books and prologues written in red capitals; opening words of books written in black capitals highlighted in red.
History note: The number 140 written in black ink on fol. 1r; classmark ‘H.1.9’ written in black ink on spine.
