Description

Creamware printed in black with 'Farming' from the 'New England Industries'

Cream earthenware (Queen's Ware) printed underglaze in black. Circular with narrow rim, shallow curved sides and flat centre, standing on a very shallow footring. Decorated on the front with 'Farming' from the New England Industries series: a circular view of a man cutting corn in a partly wooded landscape with a farmstead on the left, and in the foreground, a flask, fork, scythe and other tools. The rim forms a white surround. The back is printed in black: 'FARMING
Matching their fortitude to the strength of the earth,
the first New England settlers, who arrived in "The
Mayflower", brought forth a bountiful harvest from
the new land. The rhythm in the lives of the New
England farmers, in its seasonal pattern, will go
onward the same.
