PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 134 fols. + i parchment flyleaf + i paper flyleaf, 119 x 85 mm (72 x 48 mm), 19 long lines, ruled in ink and plummet, quire and leaf signatures, catchwords
BINDING: Nineteenth century, black morocco over pasteboards, edges gilt and gauffered, traces of two clasps on upper and lower covers.

DECORATION: Eleven half-page framed miniatures, all except the first one with short extensions of spraywork and gold balls: fol. 13r Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation, with a three-sided border of flowers, spraywork and gold balls, including a shield of arms, party per pale, (dexter) vairé of gules and argent, (sinister) gules a castle or on two wheels); fol. 34v Hours of the Virgin, Prime, Adoration of the Child; fol. 38r Terce, Adoration of the Magi; fol. 41v Sext, Presentation in the Temple; fol. 48r Vespers, the Virgin teaching Christ to read from a scroll inscribed with the alphabet; fol. 53v Compline, Christ among the Doctors; fol. 67r Penitential Psalms, David playing a viol; fol. 83r Short Hours of the Cross, St Helen and the Invention of the Cross; fol. 86v Hours of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost; fol. 90r Office of the Dead, Priest asperging a coffin in cemetery; fol. 121v Hours of the Passion, Christ untied after Flagellation.
Six historiated initials in pink with white foliate and geometric motifs on gold grounds, and extensions of acanthus, spraywork and gold balls: fol. 13r Hours of the Virgin, Matins, [D, 7 ll.] Virgin lactans; fol. 35r Prime, [D, 6 ll.] St Jerome; fol. 38v Terce, [D, 6 ll.] St Mary Magdalene; fol. 48r Vespers, [D, 6 ll.] David reading; fol. 67r Penitential Psalms, [D, 7 ll.] David praying in water; fol. 90r Office of the Dead, [D, 6 ll.] Skull.
ORNAMENTATION: Pink initials [3–6 ll.] with white foliate and geometric motifs on gold grounds and and extensions of acanthus, spraywork and gold balls; alternate blue and red initials [2–4 ll.] with violet or mauve pen flourishing; alternate red and blue one-line penwork initials.
History note: Purchased for the Museum in 1891 ‘from the library of a Yorkshire gentleman’ (James 1895a, 338; sale catalogue cutting pasted inside lower cover).
