PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i paper flyleaf + ii parchment flyleaves + 155 fols. + ii parchment flyleaves + i paper flyleaf, 110 x 78 mm (68 x 47 mm), 13 long lines, ruled in brown ink, catchwords

BINDING: Eighteenth century, tan calf over pasteboards, marbled paper endleaves, edges stained blue

DECORATION: Two historiated initials in dark pink, blue and green foliage on gold grounds: fol. 1r Hours of the Virgin, Matins, [D, 7 ll.] Virgin and Child, with full foliate border containing animals, birds, putti and a wreath with space left blank for a shield of arms; fol. 40v None, [D, 6 ll.] Nude pushing a rock uphill.

ORNAMENTATION: Foliate initials [5–6 ll.] in dark pink, blue and green on gold grounds, extending into one-sided foliate borders, often inhabited by putti, animals, and birds, with bas-de-page decoration of putti, birds (parrots, geese and peacocks), and animals (stags, hares, dogs, foxes and wildcats), for main text divisions; alternate gold or blue initials [1-2 ll.] with violet or red pen flourishing; alternate red and blue one-line initials; capitals highlighted in red.

History note: D. Gratiano Franzone (inscription, fol. iii recto: Ex dono D. Gratiani Franzone); in the Museo Civico Peloritano, Messina, Sicily, by 1807 (inscription, fol. ii recto: Del pubblico museo Peloritano 1807); the Rev. J. Greville Chester (1830–1892); purchased from him by the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1892 (purchase recorded on fol. i recto).
