PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii modern paper flyleaves + ii modern parchment flyleaves + 201 fols. + ii modern parchment flyleaves + ii modern paper flyleaves, 228 x 150 mm (148–158 x 108 mm), two columns, 28 lines (except fols. 115v – 201r, 31 lines), ruled in plummet and crayon, running headers, catchwords

BINDING: nineteenth century, black leather over bevelled wooden boards

CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 201r New Testament

ORNAMENTATION: Ornamental initials [4–25 ll.] in blue, grey, green, yellow, red, silver, brown, beige and black with stylized foliate and knotwork designs, some enclosing or extending into hybrid animals for most biblical books; red and blue penwork initials [4–7 ll.], some parted, with blue and red pen-flourished infill and extensions, often coloured partly in green or yellow, for some biblical books; red or blue penwork initials [2 ll.] for chapters; first words of each Gospel and most other books written in alternate red and blue capitals [1–4 ll.] with red and blue pen flourishing; catchwords in brown penwork frames.

History note: Edward Hailstone (1818–1890), his bookplate inside upper cover; purchased for the Museum at his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 23 April-1 May 1891, lot 2791.
