A: iv modern parchment flyleaves + 191 fols., 355 x 275 mm (260 x 190 mm), two columns, 29 lines, ruled in hard point, quire marks in large Roman numerals, numerous leaves and six quires lost, ii modern parchment leaves marking lacunae after fols. 101 and 171
B: ii modern parchment leaves + 23 fols. + iv modern parchment flyleaves, 355 x 275 mm (255 x 188 mm), two columns, 23 lines, ruled in hard point, pricking in outer margins
BINDING: late nineteenth or early twentieth century, alum tawed pigskin over wooden boards, blind-stamped with stars, floral and geometric motifs

Initials [5-13 ll.] formed of interlace, acanthus and beasts’ heads, drawn in black ink with discrete sections or additional ornament occasionally drawn in orange-red, for biblical books and prologues (e.g. fols. 88r, 116v); display script [1-2 ll.] in alternate lines of black and red capitals, some coloured (later) in yellow, blue or green; black or orange-red initials [1-5 ll.].
B
Two initials formed of interlace, acanthus and beasts’ heads, drawn in black ink: fol. 192v St Ambrose, Sermon, [A, 14 ll.] with background coloured (probably later) in blue, red and yellow; fol. 199v Paschasius Radbertus, Sermon, [C, 6 ll.] with the rest of the first word, [C]ogitis, accommodated within the bowl of the initial and partially coloured in red; display script in alternate lines of black and red capitals or Uncials.
History note: Stated to have come from the monastery of St Illidius at Clermont in Auvergne. Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), his MS 10210 (inscribed on fol. 1r); his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 5-6 June 1898, lot 883; Bernard Quaritch, catalogue 180 (July 1898), no. 3; Frank McClean (1837-1904); his bequest, 1904.
