Description

White earthenware transfer-printed in dark brown (almost black) and painted underglaze in blue and onglaze in red and green enamels, and gilt. Rectangular with cut corners, straight sides, and two small curved solid handles. Decorated overall with 'Chrysanthemum' pattern, with gilt bands round the upper and lower edges and gilt handles.

History note: Collection of Swann Hurrell, 30 Thompson’s Lane, Cambridge and from 1891, St Leonard’s (d. 1897); his niece, Miss Emily Beales, ‘Hurrell’, St Leonard’s.

Note

Chrysanthemum pattern was introduced in April or May 1808 in four versions, and was originally printed in brown for enamelling. It is an example of the influence of Japanese Imari style porcelains and their English imitations. See Documentation.

This form is described as a 'Bread Pan, Octagonal' in the 1802 Pattern Shape Book (3065-61), p. 77, No. 1176.
