Gold and white gold in teh shape of a pair of outstretched wings, with blue, green and red cloisonné enamelled feathers, set at teh centre with a moonstone carved in the shape of a sphinx's head,flanked by gold cobras. Pin fastening across the back. In modern green leather box.

Production date: circa AD 1906
Watherston & Son ran a successful business as manufacturing goldsmiths, jewellers and gold chain makers, later branching out to deal in diamonds and pearls and retail silver. They exhibited in the Paris Exhibition of 1867. A catalogue produced by the company in 1907, entitled 'The Place of Jewellery in Art', shows that the firm held the royal warrant to Edward VII, as well as the royal warrant to the German emperor, Wilhelm II. The catalogue displays a breadth of jewellery, some still in the archaeological style, illustrating, for example, casts of jewellery found at Pompeii, alongside Watherston’s replicas, as well as this brooch described as an ‘old Egyptian design’ and priced at £5 15s.
