Rosso antico with black reliefs. The hemispherical bowl, cover (A), and triangular plinth are rosso antico; the three dolphin feet, the festoons looped over buttons on the body, and other applied relief ornament are in black. The lid is pierced with a radiating lattice pattern, and has a flat button finial with an applied black rosette.

Rosso antico was a development of earlier red stoneware. It was developed between 1770 and 1776 by which time Wedgwood was referring to it as 'Rosso Antico'. The black reliefs were not of black basalt, but red-black made specially to go with rosso antico. See Documentation
