Description

Bronze, cast with highly polished surface On a tall oblong block of stone set at right angles is the head of a child wearing a 'cap', which covers the ears. The eyes are sunk deeply in the full face.

Note

Romily John (1906-86) was the son of the artist, Augustus John (1878-1961). This is the first of Epstein's three portraits of Romily as a child. It was conceived in 1907 and was cast in an edition of nine.
