Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Emmanuel Cooper always fired his work in an electric kiln, a method less commonly associated with experimental glaze work in ceramics owing to its more neutral and even heat source, compared to, say, a wood-fired or gas kiln. However, Cooper’s study of the chemistry and artistry of glazed surface is legendary. He wrote four best-selling books on the subject and created a mature body of work in which layers of slip, glaze and oxides are worked through several firings to create rich, animated ‘volcanic’ surfaces, as seen in this work. A life history interview with Emmanuel Cooper is available at http://sounds.bl.uk/Oral-history/Crafts
