Christ on the Cross mourned by St Jerome
Sculptor: Ferrucci, Andrea (Attributed to)
Rectangular white marble panel carved in high relief with St Jerome kneeling on the left beside a rock, Christ on the Cross in the centre, and a lion on the right with a cardinal's hat hanging from a stylized tree above.
White marble, carved in high relief. Rectangular, apparently cut down at the sides. Christ hangs on the cross in the centre, the initials I.N.R.I on a scroll above his head on the short upright arm of the cross. He is bearded and has long curling hair which falls over his right shoulder. He wears a crown of thorns, and a cloth around his loins. His head is tilted to the viewer’s left and his chin rests on his chest. His knees are bent to the viewer’s left and his feet, crossed one over the other are nailed to a suppedaneum. The nail heads in his hands and feet are round and prominent. St Jerome kneels on the viewer’s left beside a tall stylized rock. He has a long wavy beard, and wears a drape around his waist. He gazes upwards and holds up a stone in his right hand. On the right, his Cardinal’s hat is suspended by its cord from a branch stump of a stylized tree. A lion sits on a rock below it holding out his right paw to touch the ground below the cross, where the rounded humps of the ground indicate that Adam lies below.
