Bust of Lucretia
Sculptor: Parodi, Giacomo Filippo
Creamy-white marble bust of the ancient Roman heroine, Lucretia, on a circular verde antico socle. Lucretia is identified by the small dagger wound in her right breast, blood dripping down on to the drapery. Lucretia killed herself after having been raped by Sextus Tarquinius, son of the tyrannical leader, Tarquinius Superbus. Lucretia’s tragic violation and death instigated the revolt that led to the creation of the Roman Republic.
