Factory: Chelsea-Derby Porcelain Factory
Soft-paste porcelain covered perfume vase, decorated with a mythological scene and a Dutch genre scene in polychrome onglaze enamels and gilt.
Soft-paste porcelain covered perfume vase, painted in polychrome enamel-colours and gilt. Ovoid body with elaborate rococo handles and four scroll feet, the neck and cover pierced. The body is decorated with a turquoise oeil de perdrix ground and with two oval reserves, one painted with the Trojan women carrying away the body of Polyxena, the other with a Dutch genre scene in the manner of Teniers. The handles, feet and piercing are outlined in gold.

This was probably the vase mentioned in the second part of the 1773 sale catalogue of Derby and Chelsea factories, 'A large perfume vase and cover, with a fine Mozaic ground, enamelled compartments, the Trojan dames bearing Polixenea to the place of burial, and richly finished with gold 171 .6s. 6d'. The scene on the front was copied from an engraved illustration by J. Leveau after C. Monet in Abbé Banier's 'Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide', vol. IV, 1771
