Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a young man, painted in polychrome enamels and gilt.

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a young man, probably slip-castand painted in pale blue, green, yellow, pale and dark pink, red, and a little brown, and gilt. The edge is partly 'dry-edged'. The middle of the underside is conically concave, and glaze, and in the centre has a circularventilation hole. The edge is unglazed with three patch marks, and three areas where it appears to have adhered to something during firing. The mound base is approximately cirular with a broad tree trunk at the back, and applied yellow and pink flowers and foliage on the top. The man sits on the stump with his right leg advanced slightly, and with both hands holds a shell dish on his thighs. His physique is slender, and he wears his hair tied back in a pale yellow bag with a pink flower on it. He has brown eyes, pale pink cheeks and a red mouth. He wears a white shirt with ruffles at the neck and wrists, a white waistcoat with gold edging and buttons; a white jacket with scattered floral sprays, a pink lining and cuffs, and gold buttons; and pale yellow breeches with gold buttons, knee bands, and a dark green rosette. His shoes are white with red heels and pompoms. The shell has pink edges, and is decorated inside with a floral bouquet, and two detached sprays.
