Note

This statuette was first conceived by Maillol in 1898 in which year it was edited by Maillol's Paris-based art dealer, Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939). Maillol later reworked the figure as a larger model in c. 1926 in response to a request from the famous Danish patron Johannes Rump, whose collection (including the Maillol) would later form part of Copenhagen's Statens Museum for Kunst. Following this commission, and its success, Maillol chose to enlarge the statuette again in c. 1930. One of these larger examples is among the statuary displayed in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.
