From the early 16th century onwards the Apollo Belvedere was regarded as the supreme embodiment of male beauty, and in the second half of the 18th, aroused passionate adulation. In its presence, the German art historian, Winckelmann declared that he forgot the whole universe and felt himself to be 'transported to Delos and the sacred groves of Lycia'. By the mid 19th century this enthusiasm had abated a little, but the statue was still admired greatly, and its place as a model in art education remained unassailed.
