Bronze plaquette. Almost square with a hole in each corner. A circular area in the middle is raised in low relief. Within this, in higher relief sits the miner, in profile to left, his legs and arms stretched out in front of him. He grasps a small pick with both hands and hacks at the coal-face opposite.

The plaquette is after a sketch for the bas-relief 'Les Ouvriers du Sous-sol', part of Dalou's unexecuted 'Monument des Ouvriers', on which he worked from 1889 until c. 1898 (repr. Dreyfous, 1903).
