Description

Silver-gilt; cylindrical body with embossed decoration, a grotesque spout and dragon-shaped handle

Silver-gilt; the deep U-shaped cylindrical body has a cast spout; stands on a trumpet-shaped foot, and has a high looped handle. The body is embossed and chased with three circular medallions containing either a man's or woman's head in profile on a matted ground. Strapwork is embossed and chased round each medallion, beneath which are a band of swags, baskets of fruit, winged putti and gadroons.The base of the jug sits on a circular gadrooned disk on the stepped trumpet-shaped foot. The rim of the foot is embossed with a band of strapwork. The spout is cast to resemble a mustachioed man's head with feathered headdress. The back of the jug has an applied openwork strap which rises to meet the open mouth of the grotesque head of the dragon. The body, which forms the handle, is chased to resemble a winged serpent, with the tail resting on the cast mask of a lion. The gilding is later.
