Description

Fritware, coated in a white glaze and painted in blue, turquoise, purple, red, black and flesh tones and gilded

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in a white glaze painted in the glaze in blue, turquoise and purple and over the glaze in red, black and flesh tones and leaf gilded.
Shape: hemispherical bowl with collared rim and a low foot ring
Interior: rim is painted with a blue dentillated pattern above a black band of pseudo-calligraphy painted on a blue background. On the body, a courtly scene comprised a central enthroned figure surrounded by seated humans, harpies, birds and sphinx, two of which have a wolf’s head on their tale. An arabesque is painted between the two pairs of sphinx and a series of inverted ‘V’ shapes and pointed leaves are painted above each human figure. All this decoration is outlined in black and embellished with typical ‘minai’ colours of blue, turquoise, black, red and purple with gilding particularly evident on the garments of the enthroned figure.
Exterior: a blue band is barely visible on the rim, on the upper body an Arabic inscription (cursive) is painted in black. The glaze runs unevenly over the foot ring
