Description

Green jade plate engraved with verses on the rebirth of nature in spring, a theme set by imperial command.
"The hundred flocks, each bear its own name;
Exhort your boys to follow moral principles and truth
Ho Ch'u sits beaneath the popular tree alone
Speaking words of contentment to the listening bamboos.
Beauty and truth indeed exhale to the fragence of the plum-flowers
At the time of Nature's upstirring in the Spring."
Respectfully executed by the Minister Tai Chii-t'ing on a theme set by the Emperor

On the reverse: an engraved picture to illustrate the verse; a shepherd boy with sheep, a flowering tree and distant hills in a horizontal perspective, unlike the usual Chinese bird's eye outlook.
