Description

Bronze, cast, and gilt. Bacchus stands with the weight of his body on the left foot. Nude except for a feline pelt draped over his right shoulder, the end of which is held in his left hand. His right forearm rests on top of a tree-stump, a large bunch of grapes in his right hand. He wears a vine-wreath in his hair. Alabaster base.

Note

The lack of gilding on the back this small bronze, and the drill holes in the base, suggest that this was originally made to decorate a piece of furniture, likely a cabinet, on which it would have been placed in a niche, where the back was unseen.
