Description

Hard-paste porcelain, thrown, glazed, and decorated with painting in polychrome enamels, purple lustre and gilding. The bowl is circular with deep sides and everted rim, and stands on a high footring. On each side there is a panel framed by gold scrollwork with small areas of purple lustre, and painting in iron-red and purple enamel. Within each panel there is a Chinoiserie subject painted in colours: one is occupied by four men taking tea beside a palm tree; the other by a man seated beneath a canopy accompanied by an attendant, and by two children, and a palm tree. Between the panels there are 'Indian' flowers. There are gold bands round the foot and rim. In the middle of the inside there is a similar panel occupied by a man taking tea. A border of elaborate gold scrollwork encircles the rim.
