Description

Hard-paste porcelain painted in green, pale yellow, brown, and black enamels, and gilding. The sportsman stands against a low white tree stump on a low white base, encrusted with coloured flowers and foliage. He holds his gun with both hands in front of him, the butt resting on the ground. His white spotted dog, seated on its haunches on the left side, looks up at his master with obedient eyes.
He wears a three cornered black hat with a gold button, a long white coat with collar and cuffs of green and gold, green lining and gold buttons, palest straw breeches and long black top boots. Round his waist is a black belt from which is suspended on his left side a gold hilted dirk in a white scabbard. At his back, slung over his left shoulder with a pale straw-coloured strap, hangs a hide knapsack from the side of which a partridge is suspended

Note

Many Meissen figures depict people of the time at work or enjoying their leisure. Hunting was one of the most popular aristocratic activities in which both women and men participated. This figure was modelled in December 1743 by J.F. Eberlein (1696-1749), and was recorded in his Arbeitsberichte (work reports). In the same month he modelled a lady holding a rifle. The models were produced over several years.
