Hard-paste porcelain painted in enamels
Hard-paste porcelain, press-moulded, glazed, and painted in lime green, yellow, pale red, purple, pale brown, brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The closed underside is unglazed and has a small round ventilation hole in the middle. The flat base is oval with asymmetrically placed shallow scrolls at the front and back. The young apple wife sits on a brown stool with her right leg advanced, and rests her right forearm on a wooden barrel filled with red and yellow apples. She turns her head to her left and holds out an apple in her left hand. She wears a green hat with a purple ribbon round the crown, and red zig-zags under the brim; a pale purple neckerchief, a white chemise with elbow-length sleeves, a red bodice, green skirt; white apron scattered with purple flowerheads, and black shoes. In front of the barrel there is a small pale brown cylindrical measure bearing an impressed rautenschild.
History note: Purchased from Mr George Stoner on 18 June 1917 for £100 with the male figure pf a Cheesemonger by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher: taken by Mrs Dickson on his death in accordance with his will and in October 1932 returned by her to the Museum

This figure was one of several street vendors modelled by Bustelli at Neudeck in 1755, and may have been made at Neudeck between 1755-60 or after 1761 when the factory moved to Nymphenburg
