Description

Hard-paste porcelain, painted in enamels and gilt

Hard-paste porcelain, press-moulded, and painted overglaze in green, pale yellow, flesh-pink, red, purple, and greyish-brown and black enamels, and lightly gilded. The glazed underside has a supporting strutt a third of the way back from the front. The area in front of it is closed, and the area behind it below the figure is open. The square, straight-sided base is dappled overall in greyish-brown and green to resemble marble. Clio stands on her right leg with left foot slightly advanced and left knee relaxed. Her right arm is at her side, and her left held out in front. Her head is turned slightly to her left. She has brown eyes and eyebrows, and greyish-brown hair dressed in a knot at the back with a long tress hanging below it. She wears a gilded frontlet in her hair, and a white, close-fitting, gold edged chiton pinned to form a sleeve and partially covered by a himation which is pale yellow with a purple and green sprigged floral design, and a gold fringe. It passes over her left shoulder and is held up over her left arm so that the green lining is revealed. Her sandals have black straps.
