Chalice and paten
Silversmith: Ramsden, Omar
Silver; Gothic style chalice and paten with fitted wooden box
Silver; the Gothic-style chalice has all-over spot-hammered decoration. The bowl has sloping cylindrical sides and a gilt interior. It stands on a short stem over a large knop which is embossed and chased with a Celtic design of four stylized lilies enclosed and linked by curved straps. Below on the stem, there is a band of engraved leaves and two pairs of horizontal lines with a row of dots between them. The spreading circular foot is decorated with two applied bands either side of a border of embossed stylised flowers and scrolls. Beneath this is embossed a cross. The foot stands on a narrow applied foot rim. Under the foot is an engraved signature 'OMAR RAMSDEN ME FECIT' and the inscription 'H. THOMAS.d.d.AMICI ELIENSES A.S.MCMXXXV.' The circular paten (A) is almost flat and stands on a narrow foot rim. It is decorated with spot hammering, and has the remains of gilding on the upper side . The chalice and paten have a fitted wooden box (B) with brass handle and mount.
