Description

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello; rectangular carved and nielloed with Oriental and Classical figures on a gilt ground

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello; rectangular with straight sides and hinged almost flat lid with scrolled thumbpiece at the centre of the front. The chased and gilt cagework boders contain panels carved and nielloed with figures and scenery on a recessed matted gilt ground. Depicted on the lid is an Oriental man sitting on cushions and smoking from a long pipe; he is surrounded by five male attendants, and in the background is neilloed and chased rococo scrolls and rocaille decoration. Inside the lid on a separate flat panel is a vignette fo Rococo/Classical architecture with columns, shells and scrolls. Depicted on the front panel is a semi-naked woman reclining on cushions and a carpet, with three figures in Oriental dress nearby; behind her are Classical ruins and trees. On the right side panel is a naked women, perhaps a water nymph, seated on a shell with a cherub. On the back panel Cupid and Venus watch a courting couple; in the background are Classical arches and a castle. On the left side are two men sitting in front of a Classical folly or temple with domed roof. The base is recessed and undecorated. The interior walls and base are gilt.
