Description

Bronze with loop at the top for suspension. A rather large example of a type thought to have been produced in Syria between the 5th and 11th centuries and dated on the basis of stylistic similarities to a group of inscribed bronze censers.

Note

David Buckton, Byzantium, Treasures of Byzantine Art and Culture, 1994, doubts whether the depression on the back ever held a relic, although it may have been intended to hold one, because the depression is too shallow.
