A study for the three shadowy figures in the upper left of the painting. The motif and execution are reminiscent of Rubens. The figures in the distance behind Sir David Baird appear to have been painted in sometime between February and August 1838 (see entry for painting Cat. 42, 'Sir David Wilkie of Scotland', Yale and N. Carolina 1987, p. 254). Study for the painting in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.
