History note: Probably bought by John Barnard (d. 1784) (Lugt 1419 and 1420), in 1779 from the artist; J. Barnard's Sale at Greenwood's, London, 8th Day, 24 February 1787, lot 31, bt. Brettels for 7 gns. on behalf of Benjamin Booth (1732-1807) (Lugt 346a); the Rev. R.S. Booth (1762-1807), his son; Elizabeth Booth (1763-1819), sister of the last; Marianne Ford, nee Booth (1767-1849) (Lugt 936h.) her sister, married to Sir Richard Ford; Richard Ford (1796-1858); their son; exchanged for etchings by Schiavone with William Esdaile (1758-1837) (Lugt 2617) in 1824; Esdaile's Sale, Christie's, 20 March 1838, lot 645, bt. by Pierre Seymour (sic) for £3 15s 0d; Benjamin Pierre Seaman (probably identical with Pierre Seymour); given by the last, in 1839 to Anne Key; A.J. Mackenzie Stuart; Sale, Christie's, 7 March 1958, lot 80, bt. Messrs. Agnew for 480 gns. on behalf of the Fitzwilliam Museum
