Note

This is a drawing for the engraving in W.B. Cooke's 'Picturesque delineation of the South coast of England', 1849. De wint was one of several artists, including Turner, commissioned to produce drawings for Cooke's book. Six of his were engraved. The print made from this watercolour was published in 1814. Cooke comments on this view: 'The View by De Wint represents, with great felicity, the peculiar characteristics of the scenery. It was taken about midway (along the shore) near the pretty cottage residence of Mrs Arnold, known as Mirables, the plantations of which, with its terrace gardens, reach almost to the shore.' The majority of De Wint's drawings for engraving were executed in brown wash (cf. PD.6, 7-1977). The handling and colouring here show Varley's influence - he gave De Wint lessons in 1806.
