Description

Brass and silver, rectangular; the lid and base set with openwork silver plaques

Brass and silver, rectangular with engraved decoration. The slightly domed lid is is hinged and set with a pierced and engraved silver plaque to the top and a brass one below. The upper silver plaque is divided into four panels, each representing a season, with a couple in a vignette skating, fishing, gardening or harvesting. The lower brass plaque is pierced and engraved with angels and an angel's mask round a scrolled cartouche depicting a man supporting an angel. The plaque in the base is divided into four pierced and engraved panels representing the four continents, with a man and horse for Europe, an Arab and camel for Asia, a man with a quiver of arrows and a lion for Africa and an native American with an animal - possibly a dog - for America. The sides and mounts of the box are engraved with panels of scrolling foliage. The hinge is broken and two retaining mounts are missing.
