Description

Gold, enamel and pearls; rectangular in the form of a book, the front enamelled with a cherub

Gold, enamel and pearls; rectangular in the form of a book, the lid opens like a cover to reveal a grill pierced in a simple diaper-work pattern. The cover is enamelled with a dark blue guilloché ground in the centre of which is enamelled in colours a cherub holding a bow with a broken string. The three sides of the cover away from the hinge have a border of half pearls. The base is similarly decorated but the central image depicts a lamb sitting on a drum next to a book, two peaches and a spray of flowers. The hinge is set into the spine of the book, which is decorated with four panels of puce guilloché enamelling alternating with narrow bands of gold and five bands of white spots on a black enamel. The top puce band contains a vacant oval cartouche. Inside the spine is a small cavity for scent. The stopper (A) has a flat circular top enamelled in red within a green border. The three sides of the box (book) are enamelled in a translucent brown flecked with gold.
