Description

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello, rectangular divided into two compartments with separate lids and integral hinges; decoarated with scenes of courtship, country life and Apollo's chariot

Silver, parcel-gilt and niello, the rectangular box is divided into two equal compartments, the separate lids with integral hinges. Each lid is nielloed with a vignette of a courting couple within a rococo border on a matt gild ground. The base and sides are similarly decorated. The base depicts a watery landscape with waterfowl; the front panel depicts Apollo's chariot; the back panel shows two swans pulling a chariot through water; and the side panels show a shepherd and a flautist in a rural landscape. The borders have an applied gilt wavy edge. The interiors are gilt.
