Description

Oval, silver box; the underside of the tortoise shell lid set with a silver portrait of Prince James (The Old Pretender)

Silver, parcel-gilt, set with a tortoiseshell lid and an engraved silver portrait. Oval with straight sides and projecting moulded edges and a projecting hinge. The lid is lined with an oval portrait of Prince James, the Jacobite claimant to the throne as James III of England and VIII of Scotland, also known at 'The Old Pretender', wearing armour. Round the portrait is an applied band inscribed 'CVIVS EST' on the left, and 'COGNOSCVNT.ME.MEAE' on the right. The interior of the base is gilt.
