Description

Gilt metal and porcelain; circular, the porcelain lid painted with an Oriental building site

Gilt metal, porcelain and enamel paint; circular with concave sides and hinged flat lid. The lid is set with a circular porcelain plaque painted in coloured enamels. The top depicts a Chinoiserie scene showing a building under construction and a labourer. The inside of the lid depicts an Oriental man sketching, beside him are various tools of a builder. The sides of the box are engraved to resemble basket-work. The base has a pattern of wavy concentric lines formed by engine-turn engraving.
