Description

Circular, green lacquer box inlaid with gold piqué work; the lid set with a miniature of Venus and Cupid

Green lacquer inlaid with gold piqué work with red lacquer borders inlaid with silver piqué work; the lid set with a miniature in polychrome enamel on copper within a gold (or gilt metal) mount; the interior lined with tortoise shell. Circular. The straight sides, flat lid and base are inlaid with gold piqué work stars within a border of crosses. The moulded borders are inlaid with silver piqué work stars and rope decoration. On the top of the pull-off lid is an applied slightly domed oval plaque depicting Venus and Cupid playing with two doves in a pastoral scene. Round the plaque the gold (or gilt metal) mount is engraved with borders of zigzags, bright cut ovals and ropework.
