Ewer with a Portrait Medallion

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed white on the upper surface, transfer-printed in black, and enamelled in green. A neo-classical ewer decorated with a portrait medallion; heavy scroll border, ineptly enamelled.
History note: Purchased by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher in a court off Bishopsgate, London, on 4 April, 1901, with C.1731-1928 for 2s. 6d.

The design was derived from plate 34 in '55 Vases' by M. Darly which was 'Published by M. Darly According to the Ac 31st August 1770 where may be had Variety of Vases and other Ornaments'. Although the subject is neoclassical the border remains rococo in style.
