Description

Baluster-shaped, enamelled handle for a walking cane, set with a snuff box, and painted with three polychrome miniatures on a pale blue ground

Copper, enamelled in polychrome, with gilt metal mounts. Baluster-shaped handle for a walking cane set with a hemi-spherical gilt metal snuff box with a hinged lid. On two sides and the lid are painted miniatures within rococo raised gilt borders. The pale blue ground decorated with white diaper-work and geometric patterns of gold and white dots. The rim of the lid and box have gilt metal mounts and thumbpiece. The miniature on the lid depicts a Classical ruin in a pastoral scene; the miniature on the front depicts a man and cow in a rural landscape with a church tower and cottage in the background, and the miniature on the back depicts a spray of flowers on a white ground.
