Description

Rectangular, tortoise shell box with silver-gilt mounts inlaid with gold piqué work wolf, hound and birds

Tortoise shell with silver-gilt mounts and engraved gold piqué and piqué point work. Rectangular with straight sides and moulded projecting edges. The flat lid has a silver-gilt rim mount and two hinges. The top is decorated with a vignette of a wolf carrying a bone, a spotted hound, two birds and two insects with flowering trees in the background, surrounded by piqué point plants and scrolls. The base is similarly decorated with a smaller vignette of a hound chasing a bird and butterfly. The interior edge of the lid is set with a gilt metal border.
